Ford Fusion — 2013–2020

One body shell, several very different ownership equations.

The second-generation Fusion is a useful mainstream control because the badge hides unusually different powertrain stories. A 2.5L naturally aspirated gasoline car, a 1.5L or 1.6L EcoBoost car, a 2.0L EcoBoost car and the later V6 Sport do not carry identical diagnostic or repair consequence. Ford also sold Fusion Hybrid and Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid versions during this generation; those are not footnotes or trim packages, but separate electrified architectures with different batteries, braking, charging and powertrain logic, so they are deliberately excluded from this gasoline dossier. The gasoline Fusion benefits from deep Ford parts and shop support, but exact engine, transmission, recall history and cooling evidence can materially change dependence fit.

What Changes the Answer?

  • 2.5L naturally aspirated versus EcoBoost: The 2.5L naturally aspirated four-cylinder offers the simplest gasoline branch in this generation. EcoBoost variants add turbocharging, more thermal load and engine-specific service concerns. The badge and dashboard can look almost identical while the ownership equation changes materially.
  • 1.5L EcoBoost coolant history: Ford TSB 19-2139 documents low coolant, white exhaust smoke, rough running and related DTCs caused by coolant intrusion into the cylinder on certain 2014–2019 Fusion vehicles equipped with the 1.5L EcoBoost. Unexplained coolant loss on that configuration deserves diagnosis before purchase.
  • 1.6L EcoBoost early recall history: Certain 2013 Fusion vehicles with the 1.6L engine were recalled for coolant-system leakage and overheating that could create a fire risk. A surviving 1.6L candidate therefore deserves exact VIN recall verification and cooling-system scrutiny rather than generic Fusion assumptions.
  • 6F35 shifter-cable-bushing campaigns: NHTSA/Ford recall material covers certain 2013–2016 Fusion vehicles equipped with the 6F35 transmission where a degraded shifter-cable bushing could allow the transmission gear state to differ from the selected shifter position. Completion evidence is part of candidate review.
  • V6 Sport is a specialist branch: The later V6 Sport adds a twin-turbo V6 and all-wheel drive. Ford ecosystem depth remains valuable, but parts cost, packaging and powertrain consequence move it away from the ordinary 2.5L-control story.
  • Hybrid and Energi are not this dossier: Ford sold Fusion Hybrid with a 2.0L Atkinson-cycle engine, electric motor and lithium-ion battery, and Fusion Energi added plug-in charging and a larger battery. Those architectures change braking, battery, high-voltage, charging and diagnostic questions enough that they should be judged separately.

Why This File Exists

Why the Fusion earns a control file

The Fusion is common enough that scarcity is not the lesson. Its value is configuration discipline: mainstream scale stays constant while the powertrain can move from simple naturally aspirated gasoline to turbocharged gasoline, high-output AWD or a completely different hybrid/PHEV architecture.

The 2.5L car is the cleanest baseline

Ford's own 2013 product material listed a 2.5L four-cylinder alongside EcoBoost choices. In recoverability terms the naturally aspirated branch provides a useful baseline because it retains the broad Ford ecosystem without adding turbo-specific thermal and boost hardware.

EcoBoost needs engine-specific evidence

The correct question is not whether EcoBoost is good or bad. Ford documented specific conditions on specific engines and years, including coolant intrusion on certain 1.5L cars. That makes engine identification, coolant history, codes and prior repair evidence more useful than generic reputation.

Recall history intersects ordinary ownership

The shifter-cable-bushing campaigns are a good control-case reminder that a common automatic sedan can still have VIN-specific safety work whose completion materially affects how the car should be evaluated.

Yes, the Fusion really did come as a hybrid

Ford offered a full Fusion Hybrid using a 2.0L Atkinson-cycle gasoline engine, electric motor and lithium-ion battery, and also a Fusion Energi plug-in hybrid with external charging. Those cars may ultimately be very recoverable, but their high-voltage architecture, regenerative braking, battery condition and charging questions belong in a separate hybrid/PHEV analysis.

Mainstream does not mean configuration-proof

A buyer can make the Fusion difficult by buying the wrong specimen, not because Ford support is weak. The framework's job is to identify the exact branch first, then judge condition, ecosystem and dependence from there.
